The new big race in Rhode Island politics is the Democratic primary for General Treasurer.

While much of the early discussion has been about the battles for governor, Providence mayor, and the second congressional race, now the new political battle is between seasoned Rhode Island politician James Diossa, the former Mayor of Central Falls and newly departed Rhode Island Commerce Secretary Stefan Pryor.

Diossa announced last December and quickly collected a series of endorsements from his former fellow mayors.

But in the past few days, Pryor has collected a series of endorsements, including from Democratic town committees in Barrington, Warren, East Greenwich, and Scituate.

Maybe more importantly, the Pawtucket Democratic city committee refused to endorse Diossa despite the city’s Mayor Don Grebien being one of his biggest supporters and Diossa's wife, State Senator Sandra Cano, being a top official in the city. She is the Commerce Director in Pawtucket.

In Warren, Keri Cronin, co-chair of the Town Committee said the body chose to endorse Pryor due to his “his clearly convincing superior experience in Rhode Island and beyond.”

“Pryor is the right person for the job,” said Cronin.

Pryor has held top positions in economic development and education in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut prior to coming to Rhode Island nearly eight years ago.

“We seem to be defying expectations by landing town committee endorsements across the state. It's great to secure another important one -- an overwhelmingly positive vote in Warren -- today,” said Anthony Cherry, senior advisor to the Pryor campaign.

“Yes, on Pawtucket, while we're still waiting for the public reporting, our campaign has heard that the vote was so close in the Pawtucket Democratic City Committee that they're unable to endorse for Treasurer -- even though this is the other candidate's stronghold. This unexpected outcome demonstrates that, when people hear about Stefan's experience managing billions of dollars of public investments and learn about his vision for the Treasurer's office as a driving force for the economy, they are responding positively. Stefan is gaining momentum -- even in places where it's assumed Stefan's at a disadvantage and another campaign has the upper hand,” said Cherry.

Diossa did not respond to questions at the time of publication.

On Sunday night, Pryor, Diossa and other Democrats vie for the party's endorsement at the convention which begins at 6:00 PM.
