1.  What do you think is the biggest political issue this campaign season in Rhode Island?

COVID 19 and the continuing repercussions. We haven't prioritized a plan to reopen schools or promised the resources to do it safely. And yet, parents are in a potential childcare crisis. Some residents are out of work, some are isolated and unable to leave the house. I commend the people of the state for working to contain the outbreak, but now the legislature needs to help citizens long-term too.

2.  What do we need to do to improve Rhode Island's economy?

Rhode Island has a great opportunity to create jobs in sustainable energy. We've also heard lots of great ideas lately about hiring social workers to serve our communities better. We should also raise the minimum wage to $15. Studies show this will not cost us jobs, but it will create much more money going into our economy. Businesses want great employees, so all investment in education ultimately makes us a business-friendly state.

3.  What is the greatest challenge facing Rhode Island as a state?

It remains COVID-19, and probably will be for many months. In addition to other issues we face, I'm disappointed the General Assembly hasn't done anything for Workers' Rights even as we see so many problems with our current system during this crisis.

4.  Why are you running for office? What makes you uniquely qualified?

As an arts teacher, I was able to work in many schools in RI, so I have a unique ground-level view of education throughout the state. I'm a new voice, not an established politician funded by House Leadership. There's a reason that I'm getting so much grassroots support from neighbors; they're ready for a change.

5.  Who is your inspiration?

Some days I'm inspired by my Mom; some days by my Dad; some days Barack Obama, AOC, Rebecca Kislak, Captain Picard, Georgia Hollister Isman, Adrienne Gagnon, Jim Henson or Benjamin Bromberg.

Every day I'm inspired by my wife, Nicky. She works hard for the family in so many ways, not the least of which is being an awesome mom. Now that I'm running for office, in an Epidemic, you can imagine all her jobs are harder. Still, we work as a team when it comes to ideas that can help the people around us, including this campaign.

Bio:

Stuart Wilson is ready to work for RI families. Stuart Wilson was born in Providence. His father started his own small metal-casting shop in Pawtucket, and his mother is still a hospice nurse. Stuart has worked in education throughout the state, teaching with organizations like ¡Providence CityArts!, The Gamm Theater in Pawtucket, Ella Risk Elementary School in Central Falls, and others. Stuart has seen the challenges facing schools, and he’s passionate about doing the work to ensure a quality education for the children of all families in Rhode Island. Since taking on the responsibilities of being a stay-at-home parent of two small children, Stu has scaled back his teaching but his passion remains. He knows that he could make a difference in politics as well.
