U.S. Army Ranger Henrique Jorge Maia of Portsmouth Dies at 68

Henrique Jorge Maia, 68, of Portsmouth RI passed away on Monday, April 24, 2023 at his home. He was the beloved husband and best friend of Patricia Scanlon Maia.

Born in Angola, Africa and raised in Mocambique, Africa, he was the son of Benita Puertas Morato and Jorge Lamosa Pinto Maia.

Henrique served over 20 years in the United States Army in the 1st Ranger Battalion, the 3rd Armored Division, 5th Battalion 18th Infantry. He was awarded the Bronze Star for exceptionally meritorious achievement as a medical treatment sergeant and outstanding performance of duty during Operation Desert Storm. He also participated in Operation Just Cause in Panama and Operation Urgent Fury in Grenada.

Henrique enjoyed excellent gastronomy and wine, especially with dear friends and family here and abroad. He was fluent in Portuguese, Spanish, French and English. He loved fast cars, European soccer, his team was Benfica, boating and the beach with sunshine.

Henrique was father to Jorge M. Maia and Henrique Jeremy Maia and Opa to Zoey and Avery, all of North Carolina.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated by his brother-in-law, Reverend Father Frank Scanlon on Friday, May 5, 2023, at 11 am in St Mary/Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 23 S High Street, Mount Vernon, NY. Military burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 550 Wampanoag Trail, East Providence, RI on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 11 am.
