Retired Providence Firefighter & Arson Investigator John K. Murphy Jr Dies at 81

John Killian Murphy, Jr., 81, of Providence died peacefully on Friday at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was the devoted husband of Mary T. (Doyle) Murphy for 53 years.
Born in Providence, he was the son of the late John K. and Alice M. (Landry) Murphy. He had been a lifelong resident of the city. John was a firefighter and arson investigator for the City of Providence for thirty years before retiring in 1991. He served honorably in the United States Army and was a member of the Providence Police and Firefighter’s Retirement Association.
Besides his wife, he leaves a son, John J. Murphy (Jennifer) of Manorville, NY, and two daughters Colleen E. Gibson (Dennis) of Plymouth, MA, and Diane T. Wistran (Nathan) of Wrentham, MA. He was the proud grandfather of five wonderful grandchildren, Ryan and Kaitlyn Murphy, Kylie, Liam, and Ashley Wistran. He was the brother of the late Alice Hultquist, Catherine Slitt, Natalie Catucci, and Joseph Murphy.
His funeral will be Friday at 8:45 am from the Frank P. Trainor & Sons Funeral Home, 982 Warwick Avenue, Warwick, RI.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Augustin’s Church, 639 Mt. Pleasant Avenue, Providence at 10:00 am.
Calling hours are Thursday 4-7 pm.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Augustine’s Church.
Burial with military honors will be at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter.
