Navy Veteran, Michael Joseph Woods, Dies at 77

He was born August 7, 1944, in Providence, RI to the late John Bernard and Florence Alice (Meehan) Woods.
Michael was predeceased by his parents, his older brother John B Woods Jr., and his sister Gertrude A. Woods. He is survived by two brothers: George M. Woods and David J. Woods as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
GET THE LATEST BREAKING NEWS HERE -- SIGN UP FOR GOLOCAL FREE DAILY EBLASTHe graduated from Cumberland High School in 1964. Michael was an avid hockey player and boxer. Later, he joined the Navy and served in the Vietnam War aboard the USS Canberra (CAG-2).
Michael was a dedicated member of many organizations including the Vietnam Veterans of America, chapter 818, the Disabled American Veterans, Cumberland Veterans Council, and the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
After his stint in the Navy, Michael was employed with the Providence Journal, Stars and Stripes (Germany), and later was an employee at Verizon for over 20 years until retirement. Michael also painted houses as a side job.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to Michael's Life Celebration to be held with Visiting Hours on Tuesday, Jan. 25, 2022, from 5 to 8 pm and continue on Wednesday, January 26, 2022 at 10 am in the J.J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 am in the Historic St. Joseph Church, Cumberland. Military honors will follow the funeral mass. Burial will take place privately, at a later date in Bourne National Cemetery.
