Jessica Therese Barrett, of North Providence, Dies at 92

Barrett, Jessica T., 92, of North Providence, died peacefully at home surrounded by her family on Thursday, January 13, 2022. She was the beloved wife of Robert E. Barrett for 56 years.

A native of the Bronx, she was the daughter of the late James and Evelyn Wassmer.

She graduated from The College of New Rochelle ('49) and earned an M.A. from Fordham University, where she met her husband. Prior to marriage, Jessica taught at her parish school. While completing her M.Ed at RIC in the late 70's she was a private tutor in the family home, continuing for over 30 years, tutoring generations of local families. She was an avid reader and thoroughly enjoyed monthly book club meetings and weekly bridge and cribbage games for over 50 years with her dear friends affectionately known as the "Ladies of the Club." She exemplified the spirit of volunteerism by assuming leadership roles for The Heart Fund, Meeting Street School, Catholic Charities, and the St. Augustine Rosary and Altar Society. She also was affiliated with The Providence St. Patrick Day Parade Committee, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts.

Jessica was preceded in death by her husband and is survived by five children-Ursula Bennett and her husband George, Clare Barrett, Maura Burkowsky and her husband Joel, James Barrett and his wife Victoria, and Elizabeth Grivers and her husband Peter, as well as 10 grandchildren-Joshua, Zachary, Daniel, Andrew, Julia, Hannah, Stephen, Christopher, Raymond, and Renee.

She loved spending time with her in-laws Irene and Francis Mangan, William Barrett, and Anne and Walter Winchenbach, her many nieces and nephews, as well as her cousin Sandy Fiebelkorn.

Relatives and friends are invited to a Mass of Christian Burial Wednesday, January 19, 2022, at 11 a.m. in St. Augustine Church, Mount Pleasant Avenue, Providence. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday, January 18, 2022, from 4-7 p.m. in the Mount Pleasant Funeral Home, 168 Academy Avenue, Providence. Burial at St. Ann's Cemetery, 73 Church St., Cranston.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Rhode Island Right to Life or Rhode Island Food Bank.
