Providence police on Thursday released details of the second homicide in one week in the city — making it the third of the year.

Working on Leads
“Detectives have been working since last night. We do have some leads — it seems like the man was working in the house, and also knew the family at 223 [Progress],” said Lapatin.
“So we’re trying to put things together, and there’s not much more I can give you on that. He’s 37 years old, he’s a contractor, and that’s about all we can give you for now,” said Lapatin. “It’s the third homicide of the year.”
“He was shot in the street. He was talking to an acquaintance, and the shots came from up the street. There were quite a few [shots],” he said.
Low Crime During Pandemic
“Crime was extremely low even leading into the pandemic,” said Lapatin. “There’s always an uptick when the warmer weather comes, especially in summer — people are outside more, interacting more. We’ve come off a time we were inside for months and now people are outside. Still our stats show our crime is still very low — it’s just higher than it was [during the pandemic].”
“You can’t be everywhere — you only have so many people. We’ll go to the areas and neighborhoods where we think the crimes are higher and concentrate in those areas. I think we’ve done a pretty good job of it so far,” he added. “But last night was terrible. It’s the last thing you want to see happen.”
