VIDEO: Kennedy Family Tragedies Through the Years

Thursday’s death at the Kennedy compound in Hyannis Port, MA of 22-year-old Saoirse Kennedy Hill is just the latest tragedy to hit America’s most famous family. She was the granddaughter of Robert and Ethel Kennedy.

It is the latest in a long and tortured history for the Kennedy family.

“Tragedy is a tool for the living to gain wisdom, not a guide by which to live,” said Robert Kennedy.

Others are less charitable. "In the case of many Kennedys, their drive for power is often supported by good deeds, by a desire to help the poor and disenfranchised, by humanitarian goals. They describe what they do not merely as ‘politics’ but as the much more lofty-sounding ‘public service.’ All this reduces the need for them to feel guilty about their single-minded pursuit of power,” Edward Klein, the author of The Kennedy Curse: Why Tragedy Has Haunted America's First Family for 150 Years.

The Tragedies of the Kennedy Family:

John F. Kennedy: 35th president. Assassinated in Dallas on Nov. 22, 1963. He was 46.

Joseph P. Kennedy Jr.: Son of Joseph and Rose. Killed in a plane crash in 1944 in World War II at age 29.

Robert F. Kennedy: assassinated in Los Angeles on June 5, 1968. He was 42.

Rosemary Kennedy: Institutionalized in 1941. Suffered a failed lobotomy.

Kathleen Kennedy: died in a plane crash in 1948. She was 28.

David Kennedy: Son of Robert and Ethel. Died in 1984 of a drug overdose in Palm Beach, Fla.

Joseph Kennedy: Son of Robert and Ethel. Involved in a 1973 car accident that left a female passenger paralyzed for life.

Michael Kennedy: Son of Robert and Ethel. Accused of having an affair with his family's teen-age baby sitter. Killed Dec. 31, 1997, in a skiing accident at Aspen, Colo. He was 39.

Edward M. Kennedy: drove a car off a bridge on Chappaquiddick Island on in 1969, Aide Mary Jo Kopechne was later found dead in a submerged car. Edward Kennedy Jr.: right leg amputated in 1973 because of cancer.

Patrick Kennedy: a former Congressman, sought treatment for cocaine.

William Kennedy Smith: Nephew of Edward. Acquitted of rape in 1991.

John Kennedy, Jr.: killed with his wife Carolyn in a plane crash on July 16, 1999.

Kara Kennedy, the sister of Patrick and the only daughter of the late Ted, died in 2011.
