The Community College of Rhode Island is reporting that graffiti involving swastikas and more was found in a bathroom at the Knight Campus in Warwick earlier in March — and is making an appeal to the college community to denounce hate.

“Hate Happened Here!” wrote the college in a poster, of the event they said took place on March 5, 2019 in the Knight Campus fourth floor men’s room.

"The college has a program in place -- Hate Happens Here -- where it takes photos [of incidents] and incorporates them into posters in a way to address and make the community aware of incidents on campus," said CCRI Spokesperson Amy Kempe.

CCRI Appeals to Community

The poster, which faculty member Steve Forleo told colleagues via email was posted just outside the elevators on the 4th floor on the Knight Campus building:

This is hate speech. This speech targets a group of people by invoking fear and threats.

This speech targets people because of their skin color or religion.

We are the Community College of Rhode Island, and we do not stand for this. As students and educators committed to learning, we will not resort to using fear and hatred to resolve our differences.

CCRI's Kempe sent the following additional information on Friday afternoon.

On March 5, 2019, a staff member reported hate-filled graffiti in a men’s bathroom stall to Campus Police and the Dean of Students. The College immediately took steps to document and remove the graffiti from the bathroom stall.

In accordance with CCRI’s policy, the College initiated the “Hate Happened Here” protocol, a public awareness campaign to call out hate speech for what it is and to promote constructive dialogue within the college community.  Posters depicting the graffiti and reaffirming the college’s values as an educational institutional are placed in prominent locations around campus. Students, faculty and staff are also encouraged to contact the Dean of Students to learn more about ways to support an inclusive and hate-free community.

Dean of Students Michael Cunningham stated, “We are outraged and horrified by this act of aggression and use of vile anti-Semitic and racist images and language. CCRI is committed to providing a respectful and welcoming environment for all.  There is no place for hate speech in our college community and it will not be tolerated.”
