The New York Times on Saturday called former Rhode Island Governor — and now U.S. Commerce Secretary — Gina Raimondo a “rising star” in the Biden administration

“Company executives describe her as a skillful and charismatic politician who is both engaged and accessible in an administration often known for its skepticism of big business,” wrote the Times in an article that also pointed to Raimondo’s name being mentioned on the short list of successors to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen.

“Ms. Raimondo’s work has earned her praise from Republicans and Democrats, along with labor unions and corporations,” the Times continues. “Her supporters say she could ascend to another cabinet position, run for the Senate or perhaps mount a presidential bid.”

During her tenure as Rhode Island governor, GoLocal continuously pointed out the disconnect between critical local coverage of failings of Raimondo’s leadership while she courted glowing national press — none more glaring than when Rhode Island’s vaccination response to the coronavirus pandemic was dead last in the country.

The Times article acknowledges Raimondo “is under close watch by Senator Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts and some other left-wing Democrats, who have criticized her as being too solicitous of corporate interests.”

The article also cites Raimondo’s willingness to push for truck tolls as a major success — but fails to mention that the controversial measure was recently ruled unconstitutional in federal court.

The Times continues:

"Those criticisms have been fanned by rumors in recent months that the White House is considering Ms. Raimondo to serve as the next Treasury secretary if Janet L. Yellen, the current occupant of that post, eventually steps down.

Caitlin Legacki, a spokeswoman for the Commerce Department, dismissed speculation about Ms. Raimondo’s next moves as 'wheel spinning.'

'As has been previously reported, Janet Yellen is staying at Treasury and Gina Raimondo is staying at Commerce,' Ms. Legacki wrote in an email."
