RI State Police offer Halloween safety tips
With Halloween here, the Rhode Island State Police Colonel Ann Assumpico is reminding everyone to be safe.
“Children are twice as likely to get struck by a car on Halloween as any other day of the year. Most of these crashes occur from 5 to 9 p.m. at night, when streets are likely to be filled with excited children darting from house to house to go trick-or-treating,” said Assumpico.
Assumpico announced that additional patrols will be on the roads and encouraged all drivers to use extra care when driving.

For drivers, the RI State Police offer the following reminders:
- Drive slowly and be alert in residential areas
- Keep your headlights on – even in the daylight

- Yield to young pedestrians, even if they’re not at a crosswalk or intersection
- Never drink and drive
- Call 911 if you see anyone operating a motor vehicle in an unsafe manner
For parents and kids, the Rhode Island State Police offer the following tips:
- Adults should accompany children (under the age of 12)
- Have your child carry a mobile phone
- Know the route your child will take
- Go in a group and stay together
- Only go to houses with port lights on
- Never go into strangers’ homes or cars
- Look both ways before crossing the street
- Never assume that vehicles can see you and will stop
