RI State Police Investigate Fatal Crash Involving Tractor Trailer on Route 95

Monday moring at approximately 5:50 AM, the RI State Police received multiple 911 calls reporting that a tractor trailer had rolled over on Route 95 North in the City of Providence.

The investigation revealed that a tractor trailer, operated by Jan Kopczynski, age 42, of Bronxville, New York, was traveling in the center lane of Route 95 South in Providence.

According to RI State Police, the crash began at "a point approximately one thousand feet north of the Charles Street overpass, Kopczynski's vehicle swerved left across the high speed lane and struck the jersey barrier located in the center median. The vehicle mounted the barrier and slid before striking a light pole affixed to the barrier."

The tractor trailer then rolled over into the high speed lane of Route 95 North and slid a short distance before coming to rest in the high speed lane, facing south.

Kopczynski was transported to Rhode Island Hospital with serious injuries and was later pronounced deceased. He was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash.

Two uninvolved vehicles sustained damage as a result of striking the downed light pole.

Traffic on Route 95 North was limited to one lane during the investigation.

Troopers from the Lincoln Woods Barracks, Commercial Enforcement Unit, Collision Reconstruction Unit, and Forensic Services Unit, all responded.
