RI Regains #1 Ranking of Most Cases Per Capita Since Beginning of Pandemic

It has been a full week that Rhode Island has now been the most COVID-infected state in the country, according to tracking by the New York Times.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) reported a dramatic increase in the state’s transmission rate, which has now surged to 3,426.9 — Rhode Island’s transmission rate has increased 500% in the past 30 days.

The new increase in cases in Rhode Island has pushed the state’s ranking to be not only the most infected state in the country, but also the highest per capita state since the beginning of the pandemic in the United States in early 2020.

Rhode Island now has 264,151 cases per one million residents and tops #2 ranked North Dakota’s 240,155 and #3 ranked Florida’s 223,779.

Rhode Island has reported multiple days with over 5,000 and 6,000 new cases a day.

 

Deaths Per Capita

In the first eight days of January, RIDOH reported 43 deaths.

In December, Rhode Island had 150 COVID deaths and November, 53.

Rhode Island is ranked 13 in the U.S. for deaths per capita since the beginning of the pandemic.
