RI Health Professional Sanctioned: Romantic Relationship With One Patient, Financial With Another

A licensed health professional in Rhode Island has been placed on probation - for having a romantic relationship with one patient, and a "financial relationship" with another.

The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) sanctioned nursing assistant Rosalie Rogers, who had been employed at a nursing facility in the state, which RIDOH did not identify.

According to RIDOH, Rogers "was involved in a romantic relationship with a patient in her care at the facility" in violation of Rhode Island General Law.

"[Rogers] was in a romantic relationship with the patient prior to the patient's admission to the facility and was told by the facility's administrator that she and the patient could continue the relationship off the premises of the facility," according to RIDOH.

RIDOH added that there was an additional violation.

"[Rogers] was involved in a financial relationship with a different patient in her care at the facility [and] admits that her conduct as described in paragraph five above was in violation of [Rhode Island General Law]," wrote RIDOH.

According to RIDOH, Rogers said that she repaid the money to the patient in full.

State Stipulations

Rogers now has a sanction of 24 months of "Active Probation."

According to RIDOH, Rogers must work as a nursing assistant at a hospital or nursing facility with direct supervision for a period of 24 months, and may not work as a nursing assistant in a private home or anywhere else without direct supervision.

Within 90 days after the execution of this Consent Order, Rogers "shall complete the three online courses listed below found at https://ceufast.com. Respondent shall be responsible for payment of the $39 online fee. Respondent shall take each test at the end of each course. If Respondent fails a test, she must retake the test until she passes, and she shall provide proof that she has passed each test to RIDOH."

The required courses are:

1. Professional Boundaries for the CNA
2. Improving Customer Service for the Healthcare Professionals
3. Ethics for Healthcare Professionals

RIDOH says if Rogers fails to complete these courses within 90 days of the execution of the Consent Order, her license will be suspended until she provides RIDOH with proof that she had passed each course.

Her license status shall be listed as "Administrative Inactive" until she provides RIDOH with documentation from a hospital or nursing facility stating that the hospital or facility employs or intends to employ Respondent as a nursing assistant.

Upon receipt of this documentation from respondent or the hospital or facility, Rogers licensing status will be changed to "Active Probation."

RIDOH stipulated additional reporting requirements.
