In order to determine which states tax their residents most aggressively, WalletHub compared the 50 states based on the three components of state tax burden — property taxes, individual income taxes, and sales and excise taxes — as a share of total personal income.

Tax Burden in Rhode Island (1=Highest, 25=Avg.):

8th – Overall Tax Burden (9.91%)
5th – Property Tax Burden (4.48%)
28th – Individual Income Tax Burden (2.31%)
34th – Total Sales & Excise Tax Burden (3.12%)

RI isn't highest in New England, however -- Maine, Vermont, and Connecticut all rank higher.

The state with the highest tax burden overall, according to the analysis? New York. The lowest is Alaska.
