Providence, Rhode Island is the least happy city in New England according to a new study

And, it's not a regional thing. 182 cities across the country were ranked, and those that are located in New England look to be pretty happy except Providence.

South Burlington, Vermont ranks 6 in the U.S. and Burlington is #15. Up in Maine, Portland is ranked #23 in the United States.

Even New Haven, CT tops Providence — the city comes in at #144.

Providence, according to the study, is the 145th happiest city.

“The COVID-19 pandemic has caused the average person’s stress level to increase significantly for the first time since 2007. Therefore, it’s vital for people to boost their happiness however they can, whether through family, friends, activities, entertainment, or work. What people might not realize is that where they live may also determine how happy they are,” writes WalletHub.

Other New England cities ranked:

Nashua, NH #50

Boston, MA #61

Manchester, NH #69

Lewiston, ME #88

Bridgeport, CT #113

Warwick, #116

New Haven, CT #144

Providence ranks all the way down at #145.

“Location plays a hand in how bright or gloomy our days are. For years, researchers have studied the science of happiness and found that its key ingredients include a positive mental state, healthy body, strong social connections, job satisfaction, and financial well-being. However, money can only make you so happy – people who make $75,000 a year won’t get any higher satisfaction from more money,” WalletHub writes.

And, it is not all about the money — the  U.S. is one of the richest countries, it ranks only 18th on the World Happiness Report.

WalletHub says it “drew upon the various findings of positive-psychology research in order to determine which among more than 180 of the largest U.S. cities is home to the happiest people in America. We examined each city based on 31 key indicators of happiness, ranging from the depression rate to the income-growth rate to average leisure time spent per day.”

Who is the happiest and the least happy in the United States?

#1 Fremont CA

#182 (Last) Detroit, MI

Unfortunately, Providence is a lot closer to Detroit than Fremont.

Editor's Note: an earlier version spelled Fremont incorrectly - we apologize for the error.
