The Rhode Island Attorney General’s office informed Lauren Lee Malloy that the body of her mother Lori Lee Malloy has been exhumed.

As GoLocal reported in November, a motion was granted in court allowing the state to exhume the remains of Lori Lee Malloy, who died nearly thirty years ago and whose death had been ruled “natural."

Her daughter Lauren Lee Malloy — who was just 18 months old when her mother died in her apartment in East Providence — has always believed it was an unsolved homicide.

In July, Malloy had been informed that the RI Attorney General’s office would reexamine her mother’s case, after a GoLocal investigation.

At the time of her mother's passing, East Providence police noted in their report, that upon finding her mother's body, that the circumstances appeared “suspicious.”

“I don’t want money; I don’t want to go after the original medical examiner,” Malloy had told GoLocal. “I just want the case closed the right way.”

State Takes Next Steps

“Miss Malloy,” Stephen Dambruch, Special Assistant Attorney General, wrote Malloy on Wednesday. “The exhumation took place this afternoon and your mother’s remains have been transported to the Medical Examiners Office for forensic examination and testing. According to Dr. Chirkov, that process will take several weeks.”

Malloy is hopeful she will get the answers she has been seeking.

“Yesterday marked a major step forward for my mom’s unsolved 1993 homicide case, which is certainly no longer cold,” Malloy told GoLocal on Thursday. “May my mother’s exhumation serve as a reminder that it is never too late for justice to be served. I look forward to hearing results from the new autopsy and allowing her case to continue proving what’s possible when we never back down.”

“Thank you to the Unsolved RI community, our friends at Uncovered, the Licensed Private Detectives Association of Rhode Island (LODARI) and GoLocal, the men and women of the East Providence Police Department (EPPD), the hardworking team at the ME’s Office, all those supporting the effort within the AG’s Office, my mentors at the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute (CCIRI) and every single witness who came forward,” Malloy added. “You all helped make this happen.”
