A Rhode Island woman whose mother died suspiciously 30 years ago tells GoLocal that she has been notified by the Rhode Island Attorney General's office that the case will be reexamined.

She has been fighting for years for this review and her efforts sparked a GoLocal investigation.

As GoLocal reported in May, Lauren Lee Malloy said she is simply seeking justice for her mother Lori Lee “Sled Dog” Malloy, who died in 1993.

Her mother's body had been found naked, with clumps of hair around her hands and feet, with water running in the bathroom sink, and the refrigerator in the kitchen unplugged.

Despite the original medical examiner’s report ruling the death as "natural," Laureen Lee Malloy had recently received another forensic pathologist’s opinion that the case should be reexamined.

New Development

While the Attorney General’s office had initially refused to respond to Malloy — and repeated requests from GoLocal for comment — Criminal Division Chief Stephen Dambruch in the AG's office told Malloy on Monday he will be reexamining the case to see if it can be reopened.

“This morning, after nearly nine months of silence in response to our requests to reopen my mother Lori Lee ‘Sled Dog’ Malloy’s unsolved homicide cold case, I received a call from Chief Stephen Dambruch at the RI Attorney General’s Office,” Malloy told GoLocal. “Chief Dambruch advised that different prosecutors can come to different conclusions and, as such, he plans to start from the beginning and review my mom’s entire case again, in collaboration with me and my mom’s incredible case team at Uncovered.”

“While it isn’t officially reopened yet, this is a huge step forward for my mom’s case after 29 years of it being dismissed and buried. My mom is finally getting her fair chance at justice,” said Malloy. “We won’t back down until justice is achieved.”

“Today is a bright day for my mom and all unsolved crime victims’ families in Rhode Island,” Malloy continued. “We will continue to share updates as able. For now, I am endlessly grateful to every single person who ever believed in my mom, from the 3,100+ Change petition supporters to the East Providence townies, true crime podcasters, cold case researchers, past and present law enforcement officers and her many, many loved ones. Special thanks to the teams at Uncovered, Cold Case Digital Advocacy, the Cold Case Investigative Research Institute, the Licensed Private Detectives Association of Rhode Island and, of course, GoLocalProv.”

"Criminal Chief Stephen Dambruch reached out and spoke with Ms. Malloy this morning," said RI Attorney General spokesperson Blake Collins. "We are unable comment further at this time."
