Rhode Island’s Largest Companies Funnel Hundreds of Thousands to GOP Election Deniers
Thursday, November 03, 2022
Six companies, either headquartered in Rhode Island or with substantial facilities located in the state, have funneled more than $862,000 in campaign funds to Republican candidates who are election deniers.
Combined, the six companies are some of the biggest corporate names and employ an estimated 15,300 Rhode Island residents.
Citizens Bank and Textron are both globally headquartered in Providence and are among the companies.

And four other major corporate players Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics; PPL, which owns Rhode Island Energy, Raytheon with a facility in Portsmouth, and Amgen, which has a major manufacturing facility in West Greenwich, make up the big six.
According to data collected by ProPublica and CNN, these donations were funneled to these candidates via corporate political action committees.
GoLocal broke out the data for the Rhode Island companies.
Textron and Tuberville
One of the candidates Textron is supporting is election denier Sen. Tommy Tuberville of Alabama. Textron’s PAC gave $2,000.
Tuberville made global news after making racist comments.
Leaders of major civil rights organizations condemned Tuberville for remarks about reparations at a Trump rally in October that descendants of Black slaves are criminals.
"Senator Tuberville’s comments are flat out racist, ignorant and utterly sickening," NAACP President Derrick Johnson said in a statement. "His words promote a centuries-old lie about Black people that throughout history have resulted in the most dangerous policies and violent attacks on our community."
Citizens is supporting North Carolina Congresswoman Virginia Foxx — she is strongly supported by former President Donald Trump, is for a national abortion ban, and is an election denier.
Corporate Donations Across the Country Total Over $13 Million
"That $13 million sum is a stark testament to business as usual in Washington. These members — more than half of the Republicans in Congress — decided to side with the baseless claim to victory by then-President Donald Trump, thereby exacerbating an unprecedented transition-of-power crisis that threatened to upend the political order. And yet those members have managed to resume receiving substantial contributions from the companies that depend on the stability of that political order, including companies that garnered public relations points after the Jan. 6 riots by saying they were cutting the 147 off," said Pro Publica in announcing the data.
