Top five in the U.S. for cases per 100,000 GRAPHIC: Covid Act Now

On Thursday, the Rhode Island Department of Health announced that there were 5,372 new coronavirus cases — the third consecutive day of more than 5,000 cases.

The latest surge has made Rhode Island the most infected state in the country, according to the New York Times.

This week, Rhode Island jumped ahead of New York to claim the top position. Rhode Island now has 391 cases per 100,000 — New York is ranked second with 360 cases.

 

Rhode Island reported:

5,319 new cases Monday

5,876 new cases Tuesday

5,373 new cases Wednesday — this number is likely to climb higher

The number of new cases in Rhode Island has grown 200% in the past 14-days.

Hospitalizations

The increase in cases is driving up the hospitalizations number, but as the Omicron variant dominates, the percentage of cases turning into hospitalizations is significantly lower than with the Delta or Alpha variants.

Rhode Island hospitalizations jumped to 434 on Thursday -- the highest number since January 6, 2021.

The McKee Administration Makes Changes

Governor Dan McKee issues a new Executive Order regarding public meetings -- taking them online for the next month.

And, on Thursday night, McKee, the Rhode Island Department of Health, and the Rhode Island Department of Education announced new COVID-19 guidance for Pre-K-12 schools.

According to the state, the measures "adopt the latest CDC guidelines and will protect the health of school communities while keeping students in school."

“My Administration has been committed to keeping students in the classroom where they are safest and where they learn best, and we’re taking steps to make sure that continues,” said McKee.
