Shootings over the weekend in Providence and Pawtucket may be tied to a growing gang battle, according to Providence Police Chief Hugh Clements.
Moreover, Providence police took additional guns off the streets over the weekend that appeared to be related to gang feuds.
“We’re absolutely looking at the gang factor,” Clements told GoLocal. “We’re always concerned with retaliation.”

Then, Pawtucket police said that a vehicle with four occupants had been shot at while driving on Prospect Street shortly before 6 PM.
There, three people were shot and sought treatment at Miriam Hospital.
Confiscating Weapons
After the incidents on Saturday, Providence police were patrolling the Southside of Providence when they said they saw a heavily tinted speeding along Prairie Avenue and Pearl Street.
Upon conducting a traffic stop, police said the driver told them this “his boy just got hit in Pawtucket” — and appeared to be concealing an item in the console.
Police said that a search of the vehicle found a loaded gun and a magazine with live rounds; the firearm was confiscated.
Then, shortly after 8 PM, police on detail on Broad Street, upon conducting a traffic stop, said they recognized who they said were known gang members — who appeared to be concealing objects in the vehicle.
Police said a search of the vehicle found a loaded weapon and suspected narcotics; the items were seized and placed in police possession.
Clements said police would be releasing more information about the incidents over the weekend.
“There are no magic solutions,” said Clements. “It’s larger than law enforcement and police — it’s a community issue.”
“If Providence police are grabbing that many guns in the course of night, we’re doing that on our own. Imagine if there was a larger community effort,” said Clements.
