The City of Providence on Friday announced that the Providence School Board Nominating Commission is seeking qualified applicants to serve on the Providence School Board.

The Board has lost much of its decision-making ability since the state of Rhode Island took over the management and overall operation of the schools.

“Serving on the school board provides an opportunity for community members to be deeply involved in the success of Providence Schools,” said Mayor Jorge Elorza. “I encourage anyone who is committed to improving outcomes for our youth and supporting PPSD families to apply today.”

Each appointment term totals three years, with this year’s applicants beginning in 2022 and ending in 2025. School board members whose terms are expiring may apply and be considered for reappointment.

The School Board application deadline is Friday, December 10, 2021, at 4:30 PM. The School Board job description and application are available online.

Additionally, the School Board Nominating Commission will conduct a public forum with applicants on Tuesday, December 14, 2021, at 5:30 pm at Providence Career and Technical Academy (PCTA) located at 41 Fricker St, Providence, RI 02903. Once applicants have completed both steps, the Commission will make recommendations to the Mayor and the Mayor’s school board nominees will be reviewed by the City Council.
