Projo Cancels Home Delivery in Some Areas, Will Mail the Paper

The Providence Journal has notified some subscribers that they will no longer provide home delivery.
In a letter, the Providence Journal stated, “…we have made a change that will affect your neighborhood. Beginning the week of March 16, 2026, we will be partnering with the United States Postal Service to deliver The Providence Journal with your regular mail.”
“We will make every effort to have your Sunday publication delivered via the Monday mail,” added the Providence Journal letter.

Providence Journal's Decline - 1% of Rhode Islanders Now Subscribe to the Print Version of the Paper
The Providence Journal’s daily print circulation is now just 12,000 on Mondays through Saturday. The newspaper had a daily circulation of 200,000 in the 1980s. The decline in circulation is 94%.
The paper, now owned by USA Today, the Virginia-based company formally named Gannett.
About 1% of Rhode Islanders have a print subscription to the paper.
Printing in New Jersey
Further adding to the paper’s declining news value is the delay in production. The newspaper closed its printing facility in Providence in March of 2025 and shifted printing to New Jersey. In an era of near-instant digital reporting, the paper is often days behind the newscycle and its competitors.
The closure of the printing facility triggered 136 layoffs.
The Providence Journal letter added, “We know this is an adjustment, but we hope your relationship with us stays the same. We sincerely appreciate your understanding and support."
The letter is signed by the Providence Journal customer service team.
