All Providence Police units were called to respond to an incident at Billy Taylor Park on the East Side of Providence on Thursday night for a report of a man with a gun.

According to police, when two officers arrived, a crowd of over 50 people at the basketball court — which they said included known gang members — became combative and required police citywide to be called to the scene.

Multiple officers were reportedly injured in the altercation.

About Incident

Police were called to the park on Camp Street shortly before 9 PM for a report of a large male — wearing all black — in possession of a gun.

Upon arrival, police said they encountered the suspect matching the description, and saw that there were over 50 people gathered on the basketball court.

According to police, the suspect, who was later identified as Terrence Fisher, attempted to run away from the officers.

Police say as they attempted to apprehend Fisher, that the crowd began to surround the two officers on the scene. The officers said they knew there were known gang members in the crowd that could also be in possession of weapons.

All units were called to the scene to respond.

Police say multiple police officers were assaulted during Fisher's arrest, who they say had a Glock with a “Glock switch” in his possession — which causes the pistol to fire fully automatic.

According to police, multiple arrests for disorderly conduct and assaulting a police offer were made; Fisher was arrested on multiple firearms charges.
