A Providence police detective and state corrections officer are among 24 people facing drug charges, according to the state Attorney General’s office.

The Attorney General announced yesterday that a statewide Grand Jury had handed down the indictments, which are the result of the Operation Deception investigation into drug use among Providence police officers. Among those charged are Providence Police Detective Robert Enright,  who had been a member of the Drug Enforcement Agency Task Force and Mark Messier, a correctional officer in the Parole Unit at ACI.

Yesterday, Providence mayoral candidate Angel Taveras issued a statement expressing outrage over the officers’ behavior, saying he would review the department as mayor. “Today’s indictment of a fourth Providence Police officer as part of Operation Deception is outrageous and disappointing,” Taveras said. “Violating the public trust, at any level of government, is disgraceful and intolerable - especially by those who are sworn to uphold and enforce the law.”

“As Mayor I will appoint a Public Safety Commissioner and, within the first one hundred days of my administration, I will lead a comprehensive, top-to-bottom review of the department including a review of hiring, promotion and internal affairs policies and the record of the senior leadership in the department,” Taveras added.
