North Providence Police Dept. Receives Accreditation from RI Police Accreditation Commission

The North Providence Police Department has received accreditation from the Rhode Island Police Accreditation Commission (RIPAC).

The accreditation is valid for three years.

“Having the North Providence Police Department earn and achieve Rhode Island State Accreditation, places this agency on a highly respected and professional level. This prestigious distinction assures both municipal leaders and the community this police department is operating in a manner that reflects current best practices for law enforcement,” said Colonel David Tikoian who steps down at the end of the year. Deputy Chief Arthur Martins is slated to succeed him.

The Department will be officially presented with the award on Wednesday, December 4 at 2 p.m. at the North Providence Public Safety Complex.

Accreditation Process

The process of becoming accredited took nearly two years for the North Providence Police Department.

During the process, the department underwent agency-wide self-evaluation. The examination, and at times modification, of policies to comply with the standard of RIPAC.

On July 24, 2019, three independent assessors spent the day at the North Providence Police Department reviewing the policies and procedures to make sure they conform to the RIPAC guidelines.

The assessors completed their analysis and sent their findings to RIPAC for consideration.

After a review, RIPAC recommended that the North Providence Police Department be accredited.
