UPDATED: Whitehouse Contacted About Kavanaugh Rape Allegation in Newport

United States Senator Sheldon Whitehouse brought forth an allegation of a sexual assault committed by United States Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh in Newport, Rhode Island in 1985.

The allegation was made by a constituent of the Senator who contacted his office this week, according to a Senate Judiciary Committee transcript of interviews with Kavanaugh conducted on September 17 and September 25, released on Wednesday.

The September 25 interview -- which was conducted by phone -- contained twenty references to sex in the 45 page transcript.

Whitehouse's office refused to answer questions pertaining to the allegation on Wednesday night.

The transcript from the Senate Judiciary Committee interview which took place on September 25 reveals that Kavanaugh responded to questions about the incident and denied the allegation.

A redacted Senate staffer asked Kavanaugh on page 35 of the interview: 

Judge Kavanaugh, a Rhode Island man named [redacted] recently called Senator Whitehouse’s office making allegations concerning a rape on a boat in August of 1985. Have you had the opportunity to review those allegations?

Judge Kavanaugh. Yes.

[Redacted staffer]: So, for the record, the report from Senator Whitehouse states, “Senator Whitehouse received a call this morning from a Rhode Island constituent, [redacted], who made allegations regarding U.S Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh. [Redacted] reported that early on a Sunday morning in August of 1985, a close acquaintance of the constituent was sexually assaulted by two heavily inebriated men she referred to at the time as Brett and Mar,

“The event took place on a 36-foot maroon and white boar in the harbor of Newport, Rhode Island after the three had met at local bar. According to [redacted] when the learned of the assault at approximately 5:00 am that same morning, he and another individual went to the harbor, located the boat the victim had described and physically confronted the two men, leaving them with significant injuries.”

Kavanaugh denied the allegation. 

Transcripts Reveal RI Ties

The transcripts were first made public on Wednesday, September 26, when Senate Judiciary released the following:

The Senate Judiciary Committee today released the transcripts of two interviews committee investigators conducted with Judge Brett Kavanaugh following allegations published in recent news reports.  The first interview was conducted on Monday, September 17, 2018, one day after the Washington Post revealed Dr. Christine Blasey Ford’s identity.  Committee Democrats were invited but refused to take part in the interview. The second interview was conducted Tuesday, September 26, following allegations by Deborah Ramirez were published in the New Yorker. Committee Democrats were reportedly investigating Ramirez’s claims, but did not share such information with Committee Republicans.  Committee Democrats attended this interview but declined to participate.
