NEW: RIDE Asks Schools for Potential Closure Plans by Next Week

The Rhode Island Department of Education is asking schools to submit potential closure plans by March 19 due to the coronavirus.

“As we learn more about COVID-19, I know all of you are thinking about what you can do to prepare your schools and your community for the potential closure of school. Let me be clear that such action is not yet warranted,” writes Commissioner Angelica Infante-Green in a letter.

She adds, “I’m calling on every school district to prepare and submit a closure plan that will support instruction if your schools need to be closed for an extended period of time.”

As GoLocalProv reported, there are five confirmed cases of coronavirus in Rhode Island as of Thursday.

“This situation is unlike any we’ve faced before in our careers. There is a lot we will learn together in the upcoming weeks and months. The RIDE team and I stand ready to support you and your community in making sure we support the health and education of your children in the best ways possible,” concluded Infante-Green.

St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket has been closed since last week after a faculty member tested positive for coronavirus following a school trip to Italy.

Students are completing online coursework through Friday, March 13.

According to the school, by Friday, March 13, the self-quarantined SRA students will have completed time away from the community.
