Providence Halts Decision to Charge Charter Schools for Sports

The Providence Public School Department has halted its decision to charge charter schools to participate in interscholatic sports, saying it will review the proposal, but will not institute any "cost-sharing" plan in the 2015-2016 school year.

GoLocal was first to report the initial PPSD decision on Monday to charge public charter and non-public schools "$802 per student, per sport, per season" -- which was overturned on Tuesday.

The school department released the following statement on Tuesday.

In order to allow Providence Public Schools and charter schools to better plan for athletic cost-sharing in their budgets, PPSD will work through the Providence School Board and with our charter school partners to put in place a process that is fair and equitable to all involved.

Providence Public Schools will not be proceeding in the 2015-16 school year with a plan to implement cost-sharing for athletics with the schools whose students play on PPSD athletic teams.
