VIDEO: McKee Officially Announces Matos as Nominee for Lt. Governor
Wednesday, March 31, 2021
Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee officially announced his pick for Lt. Governor on Wednesday morning — Providence City Councilwoman Sabina Matos.
The announcement ends weeks of speculation — and a vacant office — as to who will be the state’s second-highest officeholder.

“It’s a tremendous American story — what she’s accomplished and all the good work I know she’ll do for Rhode Island,” he said.
“The office can do so much more — I know from experience the office of Lt. Governor can bring municipal leaders together and address the most pressing issues in our community,” said McKee.
Matos spoke to what she sees as the most pressing issues facing the state.
“We must continue to step up our effort and make sure vaccines are reaching our communities of color,” said Matos.
“The State of Rhode Island faces many challenges ahead," she added. "Together we will take on the issues most important to our residents — getting vaccines in arms, people back to work, and addressing the affordable housing crisis and helping our small business community to get back on its feet and get through the global pandemic.”
Culmination of Selection Process
McKee last week had announced his five finalists: Elizabeth Beretta-Perik; Rep. Grace Diaz; James Diossa; Sen. Louis DiPalma; and Matos.
As GoLocal reported this week, "Perik’s Husband Tied to Multi-Million Dollar Govt. Contract Controversy."
DiPalma congratulated Matos Wednesday morning.
"I congratulate Providence City Council President Sabina Matos on being selected as Rhode Island’s next Lieutenant Governor. Her commitment to public service, her dedication to Providence and her background and experience all make her well qualified for the job," said DiPalma. "I look forward to voting to support her nomination when it comes before the Rhode Island State Senate."
"I want to also thank Governor McKee for putting together an open and transparent process. As a participant, and finalist in that process including being interviewed by the Governor himself, I can assure you that it was both thorough and fair," he added. "I look forward to working with Governor McKee and his team and plan to continue my commitment to public service over the next two years and beyond."
