A coalition of mayors today turned up the pressure on Governor Lincoln Chafee and the Board of Regents to support the opening of the new Achievement First mayoral academy, which would serve students in Providence and Cranston.

“Two weeks ago, Mayor Avedisian and I met with Governor Chafee to share the exciting breakthroughs Mayoral Academies have achieved in the Blackstone Valley and asked him to stand with municipal leaders in support of growing the mayoral academy model in Rhode Island,” said Cumberland Mayor Dan McKee at a Statehouse event earlier today. “Regrettably, Governor Chafee has yet to offer his support. We can only hope he will reconsider his position and join with municipal leaders and our efforts to transform public education in Rhode Island.”

McKee was joined at the Statehouse event by mayors Allan Fung of Cranston and Scott Avedisian of Warwick.

Fung said the new mayoral academy would “serve as the spark” to propel Cranston schools to “new heights.” He said he was hopeful that the Board of Regents would approve the application.

A number of other education reform advocates also spoke at the event.

“We know that great schools change everything and the Achievement First Mayoral Academy is a great school that will change lives,” said Maryellen Butke, the executive director of RI-CAN.
