Rhode Island Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello has been served with a subpoena for former campaign operative Jeff Britt’s upcoming political corruption trial, GoLocalProv has learned.

In addition, Mattiello political operatives Matt Jerzyk and Leo Skenyon — Chief of Staff in Mattiello’s House office — have been served by Britt’s team.

As GoLocal reported this week, in less than two weeks, the biggest political corruption trial since the late Providence Mayor Vincent "Buddy" Cianci went to trial in operation Plunder Dome will begin. It is scheduled to start on October 5 at Kent County Court House before Judge Daniel Procaccini.

GoLocal reported:

Even the Cianci trial could not match the list of VIPs that could be testifying.

It has been nearly a year since Rhode Island Attorney General Peter Neronha announced that Jeff Britt, former campaign consultant to Speaker of the House Nicholas Mattiello, was indicted on charges of felony money laundering and a misdemeanor charge of making a prohibited campaign contribution.

Now, as Britt is set to go to trial in October, the legal machinations will collide with the political, as Mattiello is facing a serious challenge for reelection from Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung in District 15 in Cranston.

The Defendant

Jeffrey Britt - Political Consultant

There are not many things that top Republicans, Democrats and even Moderates agree on, except one thing -- they all have hired Jeff Britt. For nearly two decades Jeff Britt has been one of the top political consultants in Rhode Island.

According to campaign finance reports, Governor Gina Raimondo, Speaker of the House Nick Mattiello, Moderate party founder turned Republican Ken Block, and numerous other candidates and political entities paid Britt and his associated companies more than $150,000 over the years.

Britt started his political career working on the staff of Republican Governor Don Carcieri and became well known as a skilled policy person and political operative.

He ran two of the most unusual campaigns in Rhode Island history. In 2002, he ran his step-father Bruce Bayuk as a write-in candidate against Speaker of the House John Harwood and almost pulled off the upset victory.

For the former U.S. Attorney, the stakes are high in the Britt case.
