NEW: Keable Urges Bank of America to Keep Pascoag Branch Open

Friday, July 06, 2012

Rep. Cale P. Keable is urging Bank of America to reconsider its plan to close the only bank branch in Burrillville.

Bank of America this week announced to its customers that it plans to close its branch on Main Street in Pascoag on Oct. 12. Although the town does have a branch of the Rhode Island Credit Union, Bank of America is the only branch of any bank in Burrillville.

“To close the only bank in town would be a tremendous inconvenience for the people of Burrillville. It’s like telling us we don’t matter,” said Representative Keable (D-Dist. 47, Burrillville, Glocester). “But what’s worse is the effect this will have on Main Street. The bank is an anchor that has for decades regularly brought people to the village center, where they’re likely to visit small businesses. If people are forced to take their banking out of town, they’re likely to do their shopping and their other business there at the same time. This is a terrible thing for Bank of America to do to our small town and its local employees.”

Without the Pascoag branch, Burrillville customers would have to travel approximately ten miles away to Slatersville Plaza in North Smithfield, or Greenville, near Apple Valley Mall in Smithfield, which is nearly 12 miles away.

Representative Keable has been in contact with Bank of America officials and has asked them to meet with him to reconsider their decision due to the effects on his community.

“I sincerely hope that Bank of America will live up to its name and help to maintain one of the greatest parts of America – the small-town Main Street,” said Representative Keable.
