Anthony Gemma has taken a leave of absence from his position as chief executive officer (CEO) at Mediapeel, the organization confirmed in a press release this morning.

Gemma is widely expected to challenge Congressman David Cicilline in a Democratic primary, but has yet to officially throw his hat into the ring. That announcement is now expected to be made in April.

Gemma finished second in a four-way primary in 2010 and has been weighing a rematch with Cicilline since last year. He recently sold Mediapeel to Alex and Ani, which was viewed as the first step in his quest to run for Congress.

Congressman Cicilline is suffering from a 15 percent approval rating according to the latest Brown University poll, but no primary challenger for the first-term Democrat has officially emerged.

The lone Republican in the race is Brendan Doherty, the former head of the state police.
