Theresa Agonia appeared on the John DePetro show Wednesday morning, despite working as senior staff for Mayor Jorge Elorza who is boycotting the station.

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza's Chief of Staff Theresa Agonia appeared on the John DePetro show Wednesday morning, despite Elorza having signed on with the "For Our Daughters" WPRO boycott.

Providence firefighters, who are locked in a legal battle with the city, jumped on the issue, with union head Paul Doughty Tweeting out,  "Hey @Jorge_Elorza wondering why your Deputy Chief of Staff is on DePetro radio?  Does your administration condone calling teachers whores?"

Agonia, who is Miss Rhode Island 2016, was on the show between 9 and 10 a.m. on Wednesday -- and DePetro shot back.

"Every year the Director of the Pageant who I know, Cindy Provost, has me have that person on," said DePetro. "Look, there's very few celebrities in Rhode Island, they represent the state, it's good training for them. Theresa is incredibly impressive."

"So she was there as Miss USA.  To anyone who has an issue with that, I just have to say grow up," said DePetro. "They should be supportive of the person representing our state. Stop the petty politics."

Elorza's office did not respond to a call for comment on Wednesday.

The For Our Daughters boycott was formed in 2013, after DePetro called teachers boycotting a fundraiser for then gubernatorial candidate Gina Raimondo "whores."

The group organized public boycotts of DePetro fundraisers, and recently renewed its efforts in December 2015, with the upcoming 2016 elections
