The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) announced Monday night that test results have been delayed for a staff member at Achievement First Academy thought to be carrying the coronavirus.

Presently, two Rhode Islanders have been confirmed as having been infected with the coronavirus.

“I wanted to write and let you know that RIDOH will not have a result on the specimens for the staff member from Achievement First Academy tonight. We were aiming for tonight, but are now looking at tomorrow. Achievement First Academy Hartford (Providence) and Garfield (Cranston) campuses will still be closed tomorrow (as we announced yesterday),” said Joseph Wendelken, Public Information Officer at RIDOH.

RIDOH finally answered media questions about the number of schools days the St. Raphael Academy student -- with a presumptive positive case -- had been in school after returning from Italy.

“Also, on the media call with Dr. Alexander-Scott this morning, there were some questions about the second presumptive positive case. As Dr. Alexander-Scott shared, we were still doing further investigation this morning,” said Wendelken.

“To respond to one of those questions, the week of February 24th, the student left school sick on Thursday and has been at home in quarantine since, at our direction. (She was in school the previous three days.) She was tested on March 1st because RIDOH’s State Health Laboratories got a presumptive positive result from the adult from Saint Raphael Academy the night before (February 29th),” he said in a statement.

“Extensive contact tracing has been done regarding the student. RIDOH has identified the vast majority of the people with whom this student had prolonged face-to-face contact. Those people are at home self-quarantining (as well as the girl who tested positive). The first presumptive positive case is still hospitalized,” according to Wendelken.
