A new mixed-use residential building is being proposed on the East Side of Providence.

Walter Bronhard is submitting a plan for a five-story apartment complex at the corner of Brook and Angell Streets — one block off of Thayer Street.

A number of houses would need to be torn down at the location.

On Monday night, the proposal was on the agenda at Providence City Councilman John Goncalves' regular Ward 1 meeting.

On Tuesday, GoLocal spoke with Bronhard’s attorney, John Garrahy, about where things are at in the process.

“The proposal has been submitted to the City Plan Commission (CPC), but it has not been scheduled yet,” said Garrahy, who noted it could be on a CPC meeting agenda in either July or August.

Proposal in Focus

Garrahy said that zoning allows for four stories in the area, but that first-floor commercial use allows for up to two extra stories.

“We’re only asking for one,” said Garrahy.

“I anticipate some of it will be student housing,” said Garrahy, of the proposal that is currently 25 apartment units.

Garrahy said that there is no parking in the proposal, nor is there a requirement in zoning.

“Overall, the proposal is compliant [with zoning],” said Garrahy.

As GoLocal reported in May of Bronhard, "The Man Who Bought Up Many East Side Properties Is Now Selling Nearly $10M of Portfolio."
