Covid Act Now states, “Rhode Island is at risk of an outbreak. COVID cases are either increasing at a rate likely to overwhelm hospitals and/or the state’s COVID preparedness is below international standards.”

The county in Rhode Island hardest hit is Providence County at 11.1 daily new cases — nearly 300% higher than Newport County.

Four other New England states are ranked below Rhode Island for the rate of spread of disease. They are ranked as having “spreading in a slow and controlled fashion.”

Vermont has the lowest ranking — it is the only state in the U.S. ranked as “on track to contain COVID."

About Info

Covid Act Now is "a multidisciplinary team of technologists, epidemiologists, health experts, and public policy leaders working to provide disease intelligence and data analysis on COVID in the U.S."

The group works in partnership with Georgetown University Center for Global Health Science and Security, Stanford University Clinical Excellence Research Center, Grand Rounds, and Harvard Global Health Institute.

Earlier today, GoLocal reported the number of Rhode Islanders who are hospitalized and suffering from the coronavirus has jumped 17% - from 80 to 94, a 17% increase in less than two weeks.

This is just one of a number of concerning numbers tied to infections of the coronavirus in Rhode Island.

This week, Governor Gina Raimondo has been blaming an out breakout at Providence College for travel bans being levied against traveling to and from New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. While the number of cases at colleges is growing those numbers have little to do with the hospitalization numbers.

Dr. Michael Fine, former Rhode Island Director of Health (RIDOH), said that the increase in the number of hospitalizations is concerning. The number of hospitalizations had been steady in the 70s and low 80s for weeks.

Late this morning, Providence College announced it would continue it policy of no in-class teaching — all instruction would remain online until October 3.
