Moses Brown's Valentine's message was the focus of a Fox News segment Tuesday morning.

Moses Brown School in Providence is increasing security after coverage of its "inclusive Valentines" message to the community now landed them on Fox News on Tuesday.

The message to families had asked them to "please coach your child if purchasing commercially produced cards to select something that does not feel 'gender normative' (with separate 'boy cards' vs. 'girl cards,' for instance.)" and also consider talking to your child about avoiding cards that portray only White human characters."

"Representation matters and our students of color also deserve to see themselves in some of the cards they receive, unless we can find cards without people pictured at all," the school added.

School's Response

Head of School Matt Glendenning sent the following to the Moses Brown community Tuesday morning.

Colleagues,

It saddens me to share that the issue of our Lower School Valentine’s Day communication has become the subject of national media coverage, both in an on-line article and in a story running today on Fox TV News. First and foremost, this continues to be an opportunity to stand by OJ and our Lower School, and unequivocally affirm our values as a Friends school and our commitment to inclusivity and kindness. As a reminder, here is the message we sent to our own community after this issue was covered in the local media.

This additional news coverage may result in new levels of media outreach in the next day or so.  All such inquiries should be directed to me and Ron. Per our policy, please do not speak with the media, and please remind colleagues in your areas to do the same. Also, please be aware that media/journalists are not allowed on campus without permission.  As we have done in the past when a school issue becomes a potential media story, we have increased security on campus and will keep those measures in place through at least early next week.

This series of events has been discouraging for our entire community. I particularly ask you to hold OJ and his family in the Light.

Matt
