More Than 500 Newport Residents Without Heat Due to Low Gas Pressure, Says National Grid

National Grid says that more than 500 Newport residents between Thames Street and Bellevue Avenue are without gas heat due to low pressure.

The company says the issue is tied to a maintenance issue relating to distribution on Aquidneck Island.

Tim Horan, President of National Grid Rhode Island, hosted a media conference call late Monday afternoon on the issue.

It is unknown what the impact of the cold and heatless temperatures will have on impacted homes plumbing. Temperatures on Monday night are in the single digits.

As a result of the emergency, the Potter League has offered to help board families pets during the emergency.

“400 homes in Newport are currently without gas service. We are aware that some schools are open and those affected may be seeking alternate places to stay tonight. We will be staying open overnight to take in pets for those affected.”
