Laverne & Shirley Actress Penny Marshall Dies at 75

Laverne & Shirley actress Penny Marshall has passed away at the age of 75.

Marshall died due to complications from diabetes at her home in Hollywood Hills on Monday night.

“Our family is heartbroken over the passing of Penny Marshall. Penny was a girl from the Bronx who came out West, put a cursive ‘L’ on her sweater and transformed herself into a Hollywood success story. We hope her life continues to inspire others,”  the family said in a statement to the New York Post.

Marshall leaves behind her older sister Ronny, daughter Tracy Reiner and three grandchildren.

About Marshall

Marshall rose to fame in the 1970s for her role as Laverne DeFazio on the television sitcom Laverne & Shirley, receiving three nominations for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Television Series Musical or Comedy for her portrayal.

She moved on to directing films in the 1980s, making her debut with the 1986 movie Jumping’ Jack Flash and then Big in 1988.

Other directing credits include Awakenings (1990), which was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture, A League of Their Own (1992), Renaissance Man (1994), The Preacher's Wife (1996), and Riding in Cars with Boys (2001). She also produced Cinderella Man (2005) and Bewitched (2005)
