One key to economic recovery for Rhode Island rests in new and innovative partnerships between schools and businesses, according to a report released this week by Congressman Jim Langevin, D-District 2.

Among other ideas, the report called for the following:

The creation of an ‘internpreneurship’ program. An “internpreneur,” as defined in the report, is an intern at a business who teaches his employer how to develop their business through social media and Web sites while the intern learns traditional jobs skills. An internpreneur would also bring a “student’s fresh perspective” to developing new business or marketing models.

Mentoring Program for Entrepreneurs. Langevin also called for a mentoring program that would put entrepreneurs in touch with mentors who are successful small business owners.

Tell the Success Stories. Langevin said it was important to highlight the success stories of local small businesses. He said he would host meetings where those businesses could tell their stories to other business owners as well as elected officials.

Langevin also said the Rhode Island Economic Development Corporation should review all state polices to see which ones are fostering economic development and which ones are hindering it—and recommend some changes.

The report was based on the Rhode Island Summit on the Economy held at the Community College of Rhode Island in April.

“Our goal with the Rhode Island Summit on the Economy was to foster the cooperation and dialogue that will be key to moving the state forward,” Langevin said. “This guide represents another beginning that I hope will spur more discussion and action throughout the state. We need to get creative about workforce development and this creativity starts with dynamic conversation.”
