One segment of Rhode Island’s economy and core fiber that has been most adversely impacted in the past year has been the fine arts — especially the gallery world.

Many of Rhode Island’s galleries were forced to close — out-of-business permanently.

In an effort to support one of Rhode Island’s most important industries, GoLocal has tapped a leader, thinker, and innovator in the art community

GoLocal is now launching a new feature “Inside Art with Michael Rose” — he is the gallery manager at the Providence Art Club and one of the most knowledgeable people in the art community in Rhode Island.

The first column debuts on Wednesday, June 16.

“We are very excited to offer this new feature. The arts community has been devastated and we believe it is critical that we do everything we can to help stabilize and restore the arts community,” said Josh Fenton, CEO and co-founder of GoLocal.

Rose said, “Rhode Island has a vibrant art community and deserves equally vibrant arts coverage. I am grateful to GoLocal for offering me the opportunity to write stories about the artists and art places that populate our state."

Rhode Island has been a hotbed of the fine arts. Providence, Newport, Bristol, Warren, and Westerly all have collections of great galleries.

"Galleries are simply spaces that hold art and in order for them to be successful, they need to be activated with visitors. Arts reporting and criticism is critical in sharing information about exciting exhibitions with a broad public in order to make everyone feel that galleries and museums are accessible to them,” added Rose who continues in his role as gallery manager at the iconic Providence Art Club.

Bert Crenca continues to be one of RI's most prolific artists

Artist Community

From Gilbert Stuart to Edward Bannister to Bert Crenca — Rhode Island has been a bastion of creativity in the arts. Now, RISD grads are returning from places like New York to take advantage of the costs and environment.

"Much of the work of an artist is solitary and artwork is often made in secluded studios. Arts coverage is an important element in building connections between artists and the world,” said Rose.

"Art writing can shape the way viewers see art and plays an important role in contextualizing the work and experiences of artists for the public," added Rose.
