House Speaker: No Decision Yet on Veto Override
Friday, June 25, 2010
House Speaker Gordon Fox yesterday said he had not decided whether he would call the Rhode Island House back into session in an attempt to override any of Gov. Don Carcieri’s vetoes—including his disapproval of a bill that would expand casino gaming at Newport Grand and Twin River Casino.
“I am in the process of reviewing the Governor’s veto messages,” Fox told GoLocalProv. “I look forward to discussing these vetoes further with House members and the Senate leadership. No decision has been made at this time about returning to address the vetoes.”
Besides the casino expansion bill, Carcieri vetoed a plan to adopt “Jerimoth Hill” as the state poem, license genetic counselors, and require electronic recordings of interrogations when the potential sentence is life imprisonment. In all, he issued more than a dozen vetoes this week.
