Governor Raimondo’s Last Day
Tuesday, March 02, 2021
Tuesday will be Gina Raimondo’s last day as Governor of the State of Rhode Island —unless something dramatically changes in the United States Senate.
On Monday afternoon, Texas Republican U.S. Senator Ted Cruz’s effort to block Raimondo’s confirmation came to an end. The Senate voted 84-15 to end debate and allow the Senate to vote.
Raimondo is one of a number of President Joe Biden's nominees who have faced GOP opposition.

During Raimondo's dominance, she was elected as General Treasurer in 2010 and took office in 2011. During her period of political leadership she saw the rise of four Speakers of the House -- Bill Murphy, Gordon Fox, Nick Mattiello and now Joe Shekarchi.
Raimondo immediately leaped onto the national stage with a massive pension reform package that made her a darling of the conservative Manhattan Institute.
"The Urban Innovator Award is largely about inspiring leadership -- leadership that offers a policy model and a political example for others to follow,” Michael Allegretti, Director of the Center for State and Local Leadership noted in bestowing the award. “That is exactly the type of leadership that this year's honoree, Gina Raimondo, has provided."
The conservative editorial board of the Wall Street Journal lauded her accomplishments
Raimondo was off and running.
Sworn In, Resignation, Sworn In
Raimondo’s confirmation will then trigger her resignation and then the corresponding swearing-in of Lt. Governor Dan McKee as governor of Rhode Island.
The McKee era is only guaranteed to be 21 months.
He is likely to face a crowded Democratic primary in September of 2022.
