Gorbea Criticizes McKee, Calls for Statewide Mask Mandate in RI Schools
Wednesday, August 11, 2021
Nellie Gorbea, who is running for Rhode Island Governor in 2022, has issued a press release from her campaign stating she is "siding with science and Rhode Island’s children" and is calling for a statewide mask mandate in all Rhode Island schools.
“One of the most important roles of government is to protect people and leadership means making tough decisions. In failing to call for a mask mandate in our schools, Governor McKee is putting our kids and educators at risk,” said Gorbea.
“The guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the American Academy of Pediatrics are clear about the need to protect children from the highly contagious Delta strain of COVID-19. We all want our kids in schools and masking will help us keep them there safely,” added Gorbea's press release.

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Rhode Island ranks second per capita for cases and fourth for deaths.
The Gorbea campaign cited that the Rhode Island Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics said in an August 8 statement, “By current CDC guidelines, Rhode Island now falls into the high transmissibility category which means that all persons, even vaccinated, should resume wearing masks indoors.” Their statement continued, “Both the American Academy of Pediatrics and Centers for Disease Control [recommend] universal masking in school settings for everyone age 2 and up.”
The dramatic increase in Covid cases among children is alarming. According to a New York Times article from August 10, the American Academy of Pediatrics reported there were 72,000 new pediatric Covid cases from July 22 to July 29, nearly twice as many as were reported in the previous week.
“As a mother of three children, nothing is more important than keeping our children healthy and safe. A statewide mask mandate in our schools is the right thing for our children, our educators and our state,” said Gorbea.
