L-R Gregg Amore and Stephanie Beauté

GoLocal had the opportunity to sit down for extended interviews with the two fine Democratic candidates for Rhode Island secretary of state -- Gregg Amore and Stephanie Beauté.

GoLocal has known Amore for years. He has been a guest of GoLocal LIVE numerous times in his role as a state representative, and he has always been a straight shooter with us.

In our interview, Amore was rock-solid in his answers about how he would approach the office. While he was reluctant to directly criticize outgoing Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea on any issue, he said that there are areas that can be improved.

Amore, a veteran history and civics teacher at East Providence High School, was most engaged when the discussion shifted to public education. He has focused on how he would like to foster civics education from the bully pulpit of the secretary of state office. To some extent, that’s appropriate because of the office’s role in helping to oversee elections; beyond that, however, education is generally outside the purview of the office. We wonder if the articulate and affable Amore might someday chair a state commission to promote civics education, an area that has long been neglected, to the detriment of society.

Beauté, for her part, is a candidate who has come politically out of nowhere, but Rhode Islanders should be happy she entered the race.

An intellectual dynamo. she’s an accomplished and confident technologist in corporate America and is laser-focused on how the functions of the secretary of state’s office can be improved to better serve small businesses.

Beauté stood out -- among all the candidates interviewed by GoLocal, for any office -- for the clarity of her reasons for deciding to run and for explaining why she is uniquely qualified for the office she seeks. She provided specific examples of new technology applications and other improvements that would streamline processes for businesses in dealing with the state. Such improvements would strengthen Rhode Island’s economy. The application of some of her ideas might also help make the secretary of state’s office more efficient and reliable in carrying out its election duties.

We found this endorsement of her skills on her LinkedIn page in doing our due diligence. Beauté is just what Rhode Island needs.

A recommendation posted on Stephanie Beauté's LinkedIn profile

A product of Providence schools -- Gilbert Stuart and Hope High, followed by URI -- Beauté is a highly competent businesswoman who said that she hadn't really thought of getting involved in politics, until just a few months ago.

GoLocal enthusiastically cites the talent, energy, and big thinking that she could bring to state government.

Beauté has the potential to be a real game changer -- not just for the secretary of state's office, but for the entire state.

For these reasons, GoLocal endorses her as the Democratic candidate for Secretary of State.
