A former campaign manager and senior official in Attorney General Peter Kilmartin’s office is leaving his post, GoLocalProv has learned.

Brett Broesder served as campaign manager and spokesman for Kilmartin’s race for Attorney General last year—he is credited with helping to steer the campaign to victory amid a tumultuous three-way Democratic primary race and a five-way general election. After the campaign, Broesder was tapped to be the Director of Policy and Legislation for Kilmartin in the AG’s office.

Now, after about 60 days in office, Broesder is taking a position in the marketing and public affairs divisions of Hill & Knowlton, a major PR firm. He will be working out of the office in New York City, where his long-time girlfriend lives.

Broesder had previously worked for the company from 2009 to 2010 in its DC office, before coming back to Rhode Island to work on the Kilmartin campaign. Broesder is a 2006 graduate of Rhode Island College.

He is expected to remain the point person for Kilmartin’s re-election campaign.

UPDATE: Broesder confirmed his departure in an e-mail he sent out to a personal list of contacts late today.

"I just wanted to give everyone a heads up that today is my last day in the Office of Attorney General," Broesder wrote. "I have been honored to serve the state of Rhode Island, and can’t thank Attorney General Kilmartin enough for this opportunity. The office is full of great people and I have learned more than I ever thought possible while serving here. And I can’t stress enough that this is an incredibly difficult job to leave."

He added: "Thankfully, I will not be far from my friends and colleagues in Rhode Island, which will make it possible for me to be very active on the Friends of Peter F. Kilmartin front. In doing so, I will be helping to lead the charge in continuing to build upon the structure created during Attorney General Kilmartin’s successful run in 2010 – ensuring that if he chooses to do so, the pieces are in place for him to continue protecting families in the Ocean State as an elected official for years to come."
