EP Mayor James Briden

An audio clip has emerged of East Providence Mayor James Briden allegedly accusing teachers of playing "the crying game" during contract negotiations -- and acting like "poor people."

The clip, which was uploaded to YouTube on Thursday, had compiled over 500 views during the first day it was posted; it is unclear who the speaker, identified on YouTube as Briden, is talking with, or who recorded the audio clip.

"I did a really good job," said the voice alleged to be Briden in the audio, of previous contract negotiations with East Providence teachers. "[But] they always come at 11th hour, you can set your watch by it, playing the crying game...it's always the drama."

"That's the way poor people think," said the voice, identified as Briden.

Briden, when reached by phone on Thursday night, said he had "no comment" on the clip, and refused to answer whether the voice was his - or not.

About Briden

Briden, who practices law at Blais Cunningham & Crowe Chester, LLP, served as East Providence's city solicitor from 2008 to 2010.

He was last elected in 2016 to the City Council and unanimously elected Mayor during the inaugural ceremony; he had previously served on the Council as Mayor from 2012 to 2014.
