A walkout — and “sit in” at the Providence Public School Department (PPSD) has been planned for Friday at noon, over teachers that event organizers claim "aren't safe for students."

“The PPSD is protecting Ramona Bessinger, as well as other teachers...these teachers are not safe for students, and need to be fired," wrote the anonymous event organizers under the name "Classical Liabilities."

GoLocal confirmed that city officials are aware of the event.

The "Classical Liabilities" page pointed to Bessinger’s comments about the use of pronouns in schools as an issue of concern.

Bassinger had posted the following on social media.

“Parents, make sure your child’s school honors his or her legal birth name. Teachers are now mandated to keep secrets from parents regarding a student’s perceived gender and name,” wrote Bessinger.

“It is not a hated teachers' place to out their students. Outing is not only a [mentally] scary thing but not all kids come from homes of love or understanding. You are putting kids at physical risk because you feel entitled and you’re angry people don’t share your beliefs,” wrote organizers in response Bessinger’s comments.

Teachers Being "Threatened and Harrassed"

Bessinger on Friday did not respond to request for comment at time of publication — but she did have several posts on Facebook referring to the event.

“Happy Friday! Today is: “Let’s Compel Ramona Bessinger’s Free Speech Day” at Classical High School!” Bessinger wrote.

“Our schools have shifted from political neutral places of learning, to government-sponsored indoctrination centers driven by radical progressive ideologies. When teachers like me speak up, they are threatened and harassed,” she continued. “That's not education, it's sanctioned violence.”

The organizers of the event made several posts about how students can use tee shirts to cover their faces and conceal their identities.

Providence Teachers Union President Maribeth Calabro did not respond to request for comment at time of publication.
